Dimmu Borgir was formed in 1993 in Oslo, Norway, emerging from the raw and chaotic early black metal scene. Throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s, Dimmu Borgir expanded their sonic scope with grand compositions and collaborations with orchestras. Albums such as Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia and Death Cult Armageddon cemented their reputation as pioneers of symphonic black metal. Despite lineup changes and criticism, the band remained consistent in pushing theatrical and musical boundaries. Their use of choirs, cinematic arrangements, and high production value made their sound uniquely recognizable.
