Novak Djokovic speaks out on Australian Open overcrowding

Novak Djokovic speaks out on Australian Open overcrowding: Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic qualified for the third round of the Australian Open in Melbourne today, after defeating Francesco Maestrelli 6:3, 6:2, 6:2.

The match between Djokovic and Maestrelli, the fourth and 141st ranked tennis player in the world, lasted two hours and 16 minutes. Djokovic, who already broke in the second game of the first set, needed seven opportunities to close the set, which lasted 47 minutes.

The Serbian tennis player started the second set with a break, and secured the second set with another break in the seventh game.

In the third set, he took a 4:1 lead with two breaks, then he allowed his opponent to serve, but in the next game he broke back and closed out the match.

After the end of the match, Novak Djokovic was asked several interesting questions, but the question regarding overcrowding at the Australian Open this year attracted special attention.

The 38-year-old tennis player addressed the complaints from individuals, saying that the larger crowd was actually a positive thing. Novak Djokovic enjoys the attention and is happy that this sport is becoming more and more popular and attracts more and more attention from the audience.

“Having too much crowd on this or any other tennis tournament is a very good problem to have (smiling). I think there are much worse problems to have.

I think every tournament wants record-breaking attendance and ticket sales. That’s what I’ve been hearing actually this year and the last couple years for most of the slams and tournaments.

I mean, it’s a good sign. Obviously we want more attention, more people coming and wanting to watch the tennis live, follow it, livestream, et cetera.”- he said.

Expansion

However, speaking about the possible need for expansion, Novak Djokovic pointed out that he is not familiar with the details of the options for further expansion, but he is delighted with how much the tournament organizers strive for improvement and how much they want to provide players with better conditions year after year.

In the third round, Novak Djokovic plays against Botic van de Zandschulp, and we will see if he will be able to save his energy and reach the very end of the tournament.
